Kickboxing for Beginners : What to Expect at Your First Class
Starting kickboxing can feel exciting, but it is completely normal to feel nervous before your first class
You might wonder whether you are fit enough, whether everyone else will be more experienced, what you should wear or whether you will be expected to know any techniques before you arrive.
The good news is simple: you do not need to be fit, flexible or experienced to start kickboxing.
A beginner kickboxing class will normally introduce basic stance, footwork, punches, kicks and pad work at a pace suitable for new students. Your first session is not about being perfect. It is about getting comfortable, learning the foundations and discovering whether kickboxing feels right for you.
What happens in your first kickboxing class?
Your first class will usually include a warm-up, basic technique, pad work, partner exercises and fitness-based training.
When you arrive, the team will help you get settled, explain how the session works and answer any questions you have. Arriving around 10 minutes early can make the experience feel more relaxed.
Warm-up
The session normally begins with a warm-up to raise your heart rate and prepare your muscles and joints for training.
You are not expected to keep pace with experienced students. Work at a manageable level and concentrate on moving safely.
Basic stance, footwork and technique
Your instructor may introduce:
- stance and guard
- simple footwork
- straight punches such as the jab and cross
- basic kicks
- short punch-and-kick combinations
Each movement should be demonstrated before you practise it. Coaches can then help you make small adjustments as the class continues.
Pad work
Pad work allows you to practise punches, kicks and combinations against a target held by a coach or training partner.
For many beginners, this is one of the most enjoyable parts of the class because it allows you to apply the movements you have just learned in a controlled way.
Fitness and conditioning
Kickboxing is an active full-body workout, so the class may also contain fitness exercises.
Beginners can work at a level suited to their current ability. The goal is to improve gradually rather than exhaust yourself during your first session.
Do beginners have to spar?
Beginners are not normally expected to start sparring immediately.
Early classes focus on stance, movement, technique, pad work and controlled drills. Coaches introduce new exercises progressively and explain what is expected before students take part.
Speak to your instructor if you feel unsure about any activity.
What should you wear?
Comfortable gym clothing is usually suitable for a first kickboxing class.
Wear a T-shirt with shorts, joggers or leggings that allow you to move freely. Bring water and arrive slightly early so you have time to settle in.
You do not need to buy a full set of equipment before attending a taster session. Contact the academy beforehand to check whether gloves or other equipment will be available.
Do you need to be fit before starting?
No. Many adults start kickboxing to improve their fitness.
Classes can be adapted for different ability levels, allowing you to develop your stamina, coordination and strength over time. Some members join to lose weight, some want more confidence, and others are simply looking for a more enjoyable alternative to the gym.
Our adult kickboxing classes are designed to help people develop fitness and technique progressively.
Can kickboxing improve confidence?
Kickboxing gives you regular, visible signs of progress.
At first, you may concentrate on standing correctly and keeping your guard up. Later, you begin linking punches, kicks and footwork together.
Those small achievements can help you feel more capable and confident. Training can also help develop discipline, resilience, focus and a positive routine.

The programme offers a supportive, social setting where women can improve their fitness, learn kickboxing skills, and build confidence alongside like-minded people.
No previous martial arts experience is required.
What if you feel nervous?
Feeling nervous before a first class is completely normal.
Most people find that their nerves begin to fade once the warm-up starts and they have something practical to concentrate on.
Remember that every experienced student was once a beginner. Your only goal for the first session should be to turn up, take part and give yourself the chance to try something new.
What happens after your first class?
After the session, you should have a clearer idea of the training style, class atmosphere and whether the programme is right for you.
If you enjoyed the class, the team can explain the timetable, suitable programme options and the next steps for your goals.
